Practical Plants with a Point of Difference

Bay Harbour News August 2, 2006

When planning a garden many people think in terms of colour but the attractions of such gardens can be fleeting.  Texture Plants specialise in interesting and unusual plants that add another dimension to the garden and look good all year round.

Knobbly succulents, unusual spiked cacti and hardy natives are among the interesting range of plants at niche nursery Texture Plants. The succulents with their varied textures and colours provide living sculptures for the garden.

Co-owner of Texture Plants Hamish Prebble says busy lifestyles mean people have less time to devote to the garden so they wanted to provide hardy, easy-care plants that look good but require little maintenance.

“Plants with a structural element to them, plants with a bit of “uumph” that catch the eye and have appeal all year round,” Hamish says.  “Plants with a point of difference.  Plants like succulents and New Zealand natives fit into that low-maintenance bracket. They can cope with our hot dry summers and look good all year round”.

Texture Plants have contributed to the look of The Esplanade in Sumner with a range of unusual succulents. “Succulents are totally suited to those harsh conditions with the salt and wind and the dry summers. People don’t have a lot of time these days and don’t want to be out there in the garden every weekend.”

Texture Plants also have a large selection of hardy palms which compliment the range of succulents.

Hamish and Tim Prebble started Texture Plants in 1994 in Prebbleton and their surname is no coincidence.  Prebbleton was named after their great, great, great grandfather William Prebble.

The brothers have travelled extensively in search of unusual plants and now grow 80 per cent of their stock on site.
